Alan will begin his demo by discussing the various materials used for pastel painting and the unique qualities of pastel that makes it such an appealing medium. His demo will show how he uses broken color and loose pastel strokes to paint an impressionistic landscape. Alan will stress the importance of painting in a well planned and organized way.
Alan Flattmann is a Pastel Society of America’s Hall of Fame Honoree and Eminent Pastelists of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).
He is best known for his work in pastel. In 1987 Watson Guptill published his book The Art of Pastel Painting. The popular art book was revised in 2007 (Pelican Publishing). His work is also the subject of three additional books; An Artist’s Vision of New Orleans (2014, Pelican Publishing), Alan Flattmann’s French Quarter Impressions (2002, Pelican Publishing) and The Poetic Realism of Alan Flattmann (1981, A.C.M. Publishing).
The artist is a founder and current president of the Degas Pastel Society. His work is represented by Dee Dee Martin Gallery in New Orleans. He teaches painting classes at Abbey Art Works in Covington. For more information about Alan, go to his website: www.alanflattmann.com.
