Everyone’s favorite summer pottery camps are back! Resident ceramics instructor, Janie Dick, will explore old and new techniques used throughout history in ceramics with students. Students will work with clay and use a variety of techniques to create fabulous ceramic pieces. While developing their fine and major motor skills, children will be encouraged to use their imaginations to create functional and sculptural work on the potter’s wheel and through handbuilding techniques.

The Young Artists Studio summer program educates and promotes teen artists in a hands on learning environment through painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed-media project. Students will create unique projects while also learning professional art techniques and theories. With only 10 spots available, specialized and personal instruction gives students the opportunity to pick their own path as an artist and develop skills to create a diverse portfolio or art for their personal collection.

In this camp, hosted by resident ceramics instructor Janie Dick, students will explore old and new techniques used throughout history in ceramics while creating functional and sculptural work inspired by ceramic artists. Students will split their time between the potter’s wheel and developing hand-building techniques. Once their pieces are completed, Janie will teach students about the firing process and how to fire pottery using an electric kiln.

It's going to be another hot Louisiana summer, and your young artist may just want to chill. This week will we focus on doing just that! Campers will be influenced by some of our favorite icy treats and activities that help us cool off during these hot summers. Our artists' creations will be influenced by the laid-back fun of summer. We will work on a variety of projects including sun prints, polymer clay, mixed media drawings and paintings and some edible treats too!

Throughout the week, our young artists will make beautiful, colorful artworks, capturing the joy and wonderment of the animals, performers, and treats associated with the circus. Projects will include large scale drawings, paintings, and prints! Campers will make two dimensional and three dimensional work utilizing various media in their artistic explorations.Taught by Jessica Danby and Amanda Morris

Frank Levy's Summer Theater Camp lives on!
Keeping true to Frank Levy's legacy, this summer choreographer/director Caree Llewellyn along with The St. Tammany Art Association will have a one week camp with a full production of The Little Mermaid.
Camp will be held at July 19th-24th with the performance on Saturday and a cast party! Boys and girls ages 5-16 will experience instruction in fundamentals of acting, dancing, use of props, sound effects, body language and confidence. Every child will dance, have lines and an exciting costume.

CELEBRATING NATURE INSPIRED ART THROUGHOUT THE AGES
Taught by Meghan Garcia
Students will create a recycled fabric fiber art project and use naturally made charcoal for a large scale pollinator insect drawing. Students will learn about Contemporary Native American artist Joan Hill and create a mixed media landscape piece inspired by her style. They will create artwork influenced by Earth artists like Michael Grab and Andy Goldsworthy who create sculptures using only what can be found in nature. Book making and a handmade bead project will round out this week.

For students working on a portfolio for art school applications or those who simply love to draw and doodle, this week is a foundational class in line, tone, composition, and color. Bring a sketch book and your imagination and be motivated by Louisiana landscapes and the architecture of Old Mandeville. We will have walking field trips for drawing outdoors in the morning then develop watercolor, collage and embroidery skills on larger works informed by the morning sketches. Other observational drawing and painting skills will increase with inspiring and wacky still lifess done in a range of media.

CELEBRATING NATURE INSPIRED ART THROUGHOUT THE AGES
Taught by Jessica Danby
Students will be introduced to multiple styles and types of art making inspired by nature’s resources. They will create artwork using natural media and projects will span thousands of years of history. Students will create a pique tapestry with clay coils and learn how to felt animal wool, a practice used for artistic expression since at least 600 BCE. Students will view examples of petroglyphs and Native American symbols as inspiration for their own picture story creations and create a painted story quilt.

Students will broaden their creativity and build their skills as they are introduced to a variety of fiber art techniques. Wet felted bracelets, needle felted animals and embroidered self- portraits will inspire teens to develop work that is personal and be introduce new to ways to creatively problem solve. CELEBRATING NATURE WITH ART INSPIRED BY THE CHOCTAW AND OJIBWE CHIPPEWA TRIBES
Taught by Meghan Garcia
Students will create a mythological creature based on their favorite personal character traits. Students will create miniature totem poles from out of clay and wooden dowels, Students will learn about the cultural and historic significance of the dreamcatchers created by the Ojibwe Chippewa tribe and to handcraft their own large scale dreamcatcher. Students will draw historical and cross-cultural connections between ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, Louisiana Choctaw symbols and Louisiana plant life.
CELEBRATING NATURE WITH ART INSPIRED BY THE CHITIMACHA TRIBE
Taught by Jessica Danby
Students will create basket and tapestry weaving with natural fibers, inspired by Chitimacha artist Ida Thomas; they will draw botanical Illustrations from their own urban gardening project from native plants such as sunflowers, squash and beans; students will be introduced to story-telling necklaces and make autobiographical necklaces of their own and they’ll draw a large scale abstract drawing inspired by Louisiana butterflies. We will also create recycled vases for students to use for their own container gardens and create self-portrait chia “pets”.
