INSTRUCTOR: Rachel Loyacono
Children ages 6 – 12 are invited to join us for Mardi Gras Kids’ Camp, to be held during the school holiday break. Led by acclaimed artist, Rachel Loyacono, children will use individual creativity to create drawings, paintings, 3D and mixed media projects. Students will be engaged in hands-on projects and class conversations relating to the lesson, games, and even stories that help to ignite their imaginations. Art history is incorporated into each lesson. The goal of each lesson is to be fun, playful and memorable.
Wednesday, March 6th: Wayne Thiebaud’s Cakes
On this day of creative confections, we will be studying the work of artist Wayne Thiebaud. We will begin by making a cardboard “cake slice” sculpture which we will decorate using the impasto technique to mimic cake icing. We will then make a corresponding cake painting during which students will focus on modeling and shading so that the cakes appear to have 3 dimensional form.
Thursday, March 7th: Gelli printing/ Mask inspired Collages
To begin this project, students will experiment with Gelli plate printing to make patterned paper. Students will use plants as stencils, cut paper stencils, and texture making tools during this process. As the patterned paper is drying, we will learn about and discuss masks throughout many countries and cultures and the artist who were inspired by them such as Picasso and Sandra Silberzweig. Students will use the patterned paper they created to make a mask themed collage.
Friday, March 8th: Henri Rousseau inspired Batiks
Students will learn about the artist Henri Rousseau and will create their own jungle scenes using acrylic and tempera paint. We will then use a batik method with india ink creating a striking black ground and interesting texture. While the batiks are drying, students will create a jungle animal sculpture from air dry clay to accompany their painting.
