In this three week class we will explore watercolor with an experimental approach. Students will paint with watercolor and other compatible mediums such as gouache, ink, and water soluble pencils/crayons. Students will learn how each medium works on its own and experiment with using them with each other. This is a playful and fun class to see what watercolor can do!

In this beginner-level course, Carolyn Biggio discusses art history, developing color masses, and oil techniques with students. Carolyn will give presentations on art history, specifically the development from academic painting to impressionism in 19th Century France, and will teach students how to develop shape, color masses, and volume. Students will work new with objects each week - including transparent objects. This class is great for students who wish to learn about the all encompassing history and techniques of oil paints and still life!

Open Painting Studio allows individuals with previous painting knowledge to freely create new works of art! Instructor and artist Rachel Crawford will be in attendance to monitor artists and answer questions, but only minimal instruction is provided. This group gathering provides both professional and amateur artists with a creative and supportive space to express themselves. We encourage you to discuss your work, ask for advice, and share techniques with each other!
With a monthly subscription, students are allowed to come and go as they please on the designated dates from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Students are asked to bring any paints, brushes, canvases, and other supplies they may need.

With a monthly subscription, students will receive 25 pounds of low-fire Gator White clay, use of the pottery wheel, slab roller, and all tools and glazes. Students may also bring any low-fire clay, low-fire glazes, and tools, they may want to use. STAA will handle all bisque and glaze firing on site. Firings will take place at the end of the third and fourth weeks of studio, so make sure your pieces are bone dry and ready! Any additional firings will be a $15 charge per firing to the student.
Come and go during the offered dates and times as you please! We ask that students that require use of the pottery wheel email maggy@sttammany.art with their required dates to reserve a wheel. All students must clean up after themselves before leaving!

In the first two classes, students will learn and practice making different vessels that could be wheel thrown such as mugs, bowls, and plates. Students will trim their thrown pieces and then work with stamps and tools to add different textures, designs, and attachments to their work. In the last two classes, students will apply glazes and the instructor will give students a time and date to pick up their fired pieces. Students are asked to bring an old rag or towel to use for clean up!

Beginning Abstract Mixed-Media Workshop

THIS 2-DAY WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE
SATURDAY, JUNE 15TH AND 22ND

In this introductory workshop, students will explore the theories and techniques of larger scale abstract painting. Zona will lead students through the theories and techniques of color-mixing, effectively applying paint, composing visual space, and understanding abstract language.

Each student will develop their personal expression to further explore the process of abstract art. Students will investigate composition using the formal elements and principles of design and find their natural “mark.” Students can expect to create at least three 18”x24” abstract pieces over the course of both days. Zona hopes to provide her students with the tools to explore new concepts, develop a creative voice, and build confidence as artists!

Handbuild Alligator Platters

Use the slab roller to handbuild everyone’s favorite Louisiana friend!
On March 3rd, come at 10am to build your platter. Then you’re free to roam Downtown Covington for 2 hours before returning to assemble your gator. These two hours allow your platter to dry enough to ensure stable assembly!
Return on March 10th to glaze your animal in whatever color your choose!
Creativity is welcomed! If you have clay experience and want to sculpt a different animal on your platter, you are more than welcome to!

This beginning Color Theory class will explore the theory and history of color through hands-on color mixing and painting. Students will create a variety of color wheels and each week, will create a small painting applying color mixing theory using the various color wheel relationships to learn color harmony, contrast, and value. This class will also cover the principles of design, the elements of art, and the Divine Proportion when planning out the small painting designs.

Over the course of 5 weeks, you will practice throwing different vessels on the wheel, and learn how to to trim, decorate, underglaze, and glaze your pieces. Pieces will be fired at the end of the course and ready to pick up 2 weeks later. Students will receive 15 pounds of low-fire Alligator clay to use throughout this course. Additional clay may be purchased. All students are expected to clean up after themselves. Please bring an old towel to each class for clean up!

In this four-week class, students will learn how to paint with gouache. Gouache is a wonderful opaque watercolor paint that has been around for centuries. It is used on paper and dries to a matte finish. You will learn all its various uses, from thick to thinned with water, layering techniques and beyond. Students will work from imagination, still life and copying a 19th century master work.

THIS SINGLE-SESSION CLASS MEETS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6TH AT 6PM

Each student will work with their hands to sculpt 4 small ghosts for Halloween! Customize your ghosts with carving tools, stamps, attachments, and underglazes to add color. Pieces will then be fired, and students will be given a time to pick up their spooky friends!

Pottery Wheel Basics - Wednesdays

THESE 3-WEEK COURSES MEET:
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH, 20TH, & 27th AT 5PM

Students will learn step by step how to throw basic forms on the potter’s wheel. In the first two classes, students will learn and practice making different vessels that could be wheel thrown such as mugs, bowls, and plates. Students will trim their thrown pieces and then work with stamps and tools to add different textures, designs, and attachments to their work. In the last class students will apply glazes and the instructor will give students a time and date to pick up their fired pieces. Students are asked to bring an old rag or towel to use for clean up!

Color Theory & Design

THIS 5-WEEK CLASS MEETS AUGUST 31ST, SEPTEMBER 7TH, 14TH, 21ST, & 28TH AT 10AM

In this class, students will explore the theory and history of color through hands-on color mixing and painting. Students will create a color wheel and learn color harmony, contrast, and value through mixing colors and exploring their visual effects through painting original designs of their own creation. This class will also cover the principles of design, the elements of art, and the Divine Proportion. *Note: Traditional gouache will be used in this class (see materials list).

Mugs and Merlot

SINGLE SESSION CLASS FRIDAY, AUGUST 18TH

Want to have a girls night, a date night, or a night of family fun? Join us for a night of wine and pottery!

Students will learn the basics of either pottery wheel or handbuilding with clay. Instructor Janie Dick will teach students how to work with clay to hand build your very own mug. Students will work with stamps and tools to add texture to their pieces, add attachments, and use underglazes to add color. Pieces are then fired, and students will receive an email when they are ready to be picked up!

Please choose your preferred date and technique when you sign up! Beginner handbuilders welcome, but prior experience on the wheel is REQUIRED to select the pottery wheel technique.
